How to care for a wool blanket: check before washing

Before washing a wool blanket, read its care label. Wool content alone does not tell you whether machine washing, hand washing or dry cleaning is suitable. The same applies to a blanket sold as Merino: the complete product and its care instructions matter.

This guide helps you decide what to check. It does not replace the label on your own blanket.

Start with your particular Loom model

The wool blanket collection includes different compositions and sizes. A single washing recipe would not reflect those differences.

  • Møn and Nyhavn are described as 100% New Zealand wool, 140 × 200 cm. Their product descriptions recommend dry cleaning.
  • Fanø contains 80% Merino wool and 20% nylon and measures 200 × 220 cm. Its description directs you to the care label and asks you to contact us if the instructions are unclear.

Do not transfer the advice for one model to another. If you bought the blanket some time ago, use its sewn-in label to identify the instructions for the item you actually own.

Does it need cleaning, or just freshening?

Airing can refresh a wool blanket between cleans. Support the fabric while airing it in a dry place with airflow, away from strong direct sunlight. If there is a stain or persistent soiling, airing is not a substitute for appropriate cleaning.

Look at what needs attention before choosing a method: an everyday refresh, a small mark and a heavily soiled blanket are different situations.

What if you spill something?

Gently blot excess liquid with a clean cloth rather than rubbing it into the fabric. Before using water or any cleaning product, check the care instructions. For a blanket with a dry-cleaning recommendation, ask a professional cleaner about the stain and show them the label. Avoid experimenting with a general online stain-removal recipe.

Can a wool blanket go in the washing machine?

Only if the individual care label explicitly allows it. A wool programme on the machine does not make every wool blanket washable. Where machine washing is permitted, follow the stated programme, temperature and detergent instructions. Do not choose a temperature based only on the material name.

For Møn and Nyhavn, the published product advice is dry cleaning. This article is not permission to put those models on a wool cycle.

Drying and storage

If washing is allowed, follow the label’s drying instructions and support the wet blanket’s weight. Do not assume tumble drying is suitable. Put the blanket away only when it is completely dry.

For longer storage, make a note of the model and keep a photograph of its care label. That small step makes it easier to find the right information next season or explain the item to a cleaner.

What to send us if you are unsure

A clear photograph of the care label and the model name are more useful than “it is a wool blanket”. Tell us whether you need routine care advice or help after a spill. If you still have your order confirmation, it can help identify the product. Avoid starting a wash while waiting for clarification.

Frequently asked questions

Does 100% wool mean hand washable?

No. Fibre composition and permitted cleaning method are different pieces of information. Check the label.

Does nylon make Fanø machine washable?

Not by itself. Fanø is an 80% Merino and 20% nylon blend; its care label decides the cleaning method.

How often should I wash my blanket?

There is no single schedule for every model and household. Consider its condition and care instructions rather than washing automatically after a set number of days.

What should I do if the label is missing?

Contact us with the model name or order details before choosing a cleaning method. Do not treat a similar-looking blanket as proof of the correct care.
