600 GSM means that one square metre of fabric has a stated weight of 600 grams. For towels, this helps you compare fabric weight. It is not the total weight of every towel, and it is not a complete score for softness, absorbency or quality.
GSM and towel size are different measurements
GSM stands for grams per square metre. Dimensions tell you how much fabric there is. A small towel and a large towel can both be 600 GSM while having different total weights.
To estimate the fabric weight, multiply width in metres by length in metres and then by GSM:
- 50 × 100 cm: 0.5 × 1.0 × 600 = approximately 300 g.
- 100 × 150 cm: 1.0 × 1.5 × 600 = approximately 900 g.
These are calculations from nominal area and fabric weight, not weighed measurements of Loom products. Hems, manufacturing tolerances and finishing can affect the finished item. Do not use the estimates as exact shipping weights.
What does the number tell you about TERRY?
Loom’s TERRY towel sets are described as 100% cotton terry at 600 GSM. The looped surface gives the towels a fuller texture than a flatwoven towel. GSM adds information about the weight of that fabric.
The three-piece Flint set contains three different sizes. The GSM is the same stated fabric specification, even though each towel has a different area.
Is higher GSM always better?
No. For the same dimensions, a higher GSM means a higher nominal fabric weight. Whether that is desirable depends on how you plan to use the towel. Someone choosing for a bathroom may value a substantial textile; someone packing a small travel bag may prefer less weight and volume.
Compare the material, weave, dimensions and care instructions as well. A GSM number does not identify cotton fibre length, prove a particular drying time or tell you how a towel will feel to you.
Does 600 GSM guarantee absorbency or fast drying?
It does not give either result by itself. Absorbency and drying performance depend on the finished textile and the conditions of use. Without comparable test results, it would be misleading to turn GSM into a promise that one Loom towel absorbs a set amount more or dries a fixed number of times faster.
Think about the drying space available at home and how often you need a fresh towel. Allow towels to open out after use rather than leaving them tightly bundled.
How should you compare two towel sets?
- Check how many hand towels and bath towels are included.
- Compare the actual dimensions.
- Read fibre composition and weave.
- Use GSM to understand fabric weight.
- Check the care requirements and choose your colour.
For example, TERRY in white and aquamarine has two 50 × 100 cm hand towels and two 100 × 150 cm bath towels. The set contents are as important to the purchase as the 600 GSM specification.
Frequently asked questions
Does 600 GSM mean every towel weighs 600 g?
No. It means 600 g per square metre of fabric. Total weight also depends on area and construction.
Can I compare a hammam towel and terry using GSM alone?
No. Their different constructions also matter. Read our comparison of hammam and terry towels.
Does GSM decide the washing temperature?
No. Follow the product’s care label. Our cotton towel care guide explains the published TERRY instructions.
